Dr. Seuss Day and Winners!

Hello Darlings!  Friday was SEUSStastic!  Usually I don't make a big deal about Dr. Seuss' birthday because most activities out there are tailored to the younger kiddos.  We third grade teachers have to be "serious" and we cannot have any "fluff" according to our administrators.  So I decided to make some unfluff and celebrate Dr. Seuss anyway.  There are quite a few of his books that are a DRA 38 which is the end of 3rd grade reading level.

My school librarian sells Dr. Seuss hats so everyone was allowed to wear a crazy hat on Friday.  This is what inspired me to make a day of it.  The kiddos were going to be nuts anyway because of their crazy hats, so why not use it to my advantage?   I had kiddos stuffing recycled paper into the hats to make them stay up. (see what I mean?)

Above, you can see the kiddos reading Seuss books with their partners.  They had to read four books and figure out the theme for each one.  We had to talk about the fact that the theme is not always obvious.  For example, a lot of the kiddos read I Can Read with My Eyes Shut and it kept saying not to read with your eyes closed.  We found out that is really means, Pay Attention to What You READ!

In this activity, kiddos had to make up as many real words as they could using one of Dr. Seuss' book titles and then make up "Seussy Words."  I had a prize for the person who created the most real words and a prize for the person who created the longest real word.

The Math Game is differentiated because I have such a diverse set of learners. (I am sure you do too!)  Green is addition and subtraction only.
Yellow is the same, but with multiplication added.
Red has everything and long division.

Needless to say, we has a SUPER SEUSSy DAY!

Thanks to everyone that signed up to get our posts to your inboxes!  I do that for all my fav bloggers so I know I won't ever miss a post or FLASH FREEBIE!

Spring Literacy Centers and Freebie!

Hello darlings!  I hope your week has started out splendidly!  After having two snow days last week, I was so used to staying up late and sleeping in.  Boy, did that catch up with me Monday morning!  I thought I was dying.  (I LOVE my sleep!)

As promised, I worked my bum off on those two lovely days and knocked out six super fun literacy centers!  Kiddos really enjoy reviewing concepts while playing games.  I bet you didn't know that, right?  =)

These babies are Common Core aligned and just waiting for your little geniuses... and your laminator!  I store my playing cards in sandwich bags and place these, along with the direction sheet and recording sheets, in a gallon zipped locked bag.  I label a hanging file folder with the theme so I can find it easily next year.

It's Here! Common Core MATH!

I hope you are getting to relax and enjoy your summer!  I am just so happy I get to sleep in everyday!  It is my favorite!  So, I finally finished the Common Core Checklist with Kid Friendly Language for Math.  This is for third grade, but take heart, Gretchen is working on one for second grade and Shelley is working on one for kindergarten.  Make sure to check back often for updates!

Feel free to share this with your teacher friends and PIN IT!  I want as many people as possible to be able to use this and not have to remake one.  It was a lot of work!  Hopefully I can save somebody some time. =)

Common Core Checklist

I hope your summer is off to a great start!  Mine has been busy getting ready for my little sister's wedding.  I am trying to plan her Bridal Shower right now.  Got any amazing ideas?

So after my conference on the Common Core, I decided to make myself a checklist and include kid friendly language, because let's face it, standards/objectives can be written like they are meant for a rocket scientist to figure out.  I wanted something that was easy and wouldn't make my brain hurt when I was planning.  This is for third grade.  So lucky you, Ms. Third Grade Teacher!  You can have this for FREE!  If you don't teach 3rd grade, feel free to print it off and share it with your 3rd grade teachers at your school.

I will be making a checklist for Math like this as well, just got to get my bottom into gear!
Download for free at my TPT store.  A lot of my teacher friends told me they can't download my freebies because they don't have a Teachers Pay Teachers account.  Why not?  It is free and simple to sign up!  You can also follow your favorite sellers (hint, hint) and it will notify you when they add more stuff (like freebies) then you can get on there and download your little heart out!

Common Core Resources

Hello again darlings!  Our last day of school was Monday and while you may be thinking my hiatis from blogging was because of all the fun I was having this summer, think again... I was at a Common Core conference.  Yep, the first day of summer, I became the student.  I know, I am crazy, since I had a choice in the matter, but I am a big dork, and I like to get a head start on things.  Don't feel too bad for me.  I did get to go boating and fishing!

So basically, I wanted to give you some resources for Common Core.  Please bare in mind that I still have two more days to attend of this conference, so I'll post about that later. I am not an expert by any means.    Click the pic to download my notes.

Also check out these resources I found on the web.

Teaching Channel: videos of ideas to teach some of the more challenging Common Core

PTA Resources by grade level: Awesome printouts to give to your parents to help them understand the changes coming.  It was great for me too!
